Review : Cheliya – Epic Love Saga!

Director Mani Ratnam’s Telugu movie Cheliya, (also spelt as Cheliyaa,) starring Karthi and Aditi Rao Hydari, is the dubbed version of the much talked about Tamil film Kaatru Veliyidai.

Story:

Varun (Karthi) is a military pilot, who is held as a prisoner of war. He is very strong and softhearted but is very unsure inside. Being in prison, he recalls his romance with a local doctor (Aditi Rao Hydari,) who is vulnerable and fragile on the outside and determined and headstrong inside. How these two people with opposite characters gel forms the crux of the story.

Performances:

Karthi as military guy gave his ever best as an artist. Aditi Rao Hyderi has done equity to her part as an experienced artist, and the chemistry between her and Karthi worked out well and remains a highlight in the movie. Additionally, K.P.A.C. Lalitha, Shraddha Srinath, Rukmini Vijayakumar, R.J. Balaji as supporting characters did their best.

Review: 100 Days of Love – Decent love story but boring

Plot:

Rao Gopal Rao (Dulquer Salman) is a features artist, aspiring cartoonist who is just figuring out to deal with a break up. One of those arid days, he accidentally sees and falls in love with Savitri (Nithya Menen). Rao Gopal Rao chases Savitri in the big world of Bengaluru but in the due course he happens to meet Rahul (Rahul Madhav) who warns him to be away from Savitri. However, RGR meets Savitri accidentally and discovers an old connection between them. Both RGR & Savitri eventually get closer but she chooses to get engaged to Rahul. How did RGR & Savitri end up – as friends or lovers? – forms the rest of the story.

Actors’ Performances:

Dulquer is a gem of an actor and he always shines in characters like ‘Rao Gopal Rao’. The name sounds vintage but he just any other sensible, sensitive, passionate creative guy-next-door.

Nithya Menen was no less! She was gorgeous and her character ‘Savitri’ was decent and dignified enough but could have been more intense and interesting.

And both of them strike a brilliant chemistry. But the guy who could grab your eyeballs with his personality and character is Shekar Menon as ‘Gummadi’ in the film. However Rahul Madhav, Vineeth and Praveena played brief and less significant roles. 

Analysis:

Much against to the hype, 100 Days of Love is a simple and routine love story marred by a lackadaisical narrative. Director Jenuse Mohamed chose an urbane premise but fails to strike a chord in spite of a decent plot.

Guess what! Unlike the usual love stories we get to see in Telugu, this film has minimal characters but all of them are simple, sensible, sensitive and realistic. But it is the narration that affects the love story. It is devoid of the quintessential vigor, fun and emotional connect that can help you enjoy the film. A routine plot, conflict point and screenplay but the lack of an effective staging spoils the broth.

The characters and performances along with arresting visuals are the lone engaging elements in the film. But the screenplay fails to engage you right from the word go. The film keeps crawling…crawling eventually triggering you to check your WhatsApp/Facebook notifications/at least your phone lock screen once in a while. Now we leave it your imagination and intelligence!

Positive Aspects:

– Performances of the lead cast especially Dulquer, Nithya & Shekar Menon.

– Story and characterization.

– Narrative especially Screenplay

Music:

Songs by Govind Menon and back ground score by Bijibal might have served the wants of his director but not the script. The songs might not appeal to all the sections of the audience and the back ground score could have been livelier.

Verdict:

100 Days of Love is a simple, decent and routine love story which is marred by a boring narrative. But if you are accompanied by expectations, it can be 2hr 35mins of boredom!


Review: Aatadukundam Raa – Give a miss!

Story:
Anand Prasad (Aanand) and Vijay Ram (Murali Sharma) are good friends and business partners. But due to the ploy of their opponents Shanta Ram & Somaraju (Posani), Vijay Ram loses his property and their friendship is broken. Years later, Karthik (Sushanth), the son of Anand enters into Vijay Ram’s life but with a mission. What is his secret mission and how did he reunite Anand & Vijay forms the rest of the story.

Actors Performances:

Sushanth: This young, promising hero who is desperate enough to score a hit has fallen prey to a brainless drama. Besides the usual routine, he tried out comedy with Brahmi but unfortunately that couldn’t leave us impressed.

Sonam Bajwa: Yet another heroine imported from no man’s land trying to act like our girl-next-door. Well this newbie also follows the regular protocol of ‘two romantic scenes & four songs’ which may not lead here anywhere.

While exceptional actors like Murali Sharma & Aanand were wasted, Brahmi, 30yrs industry Prithvi, Vennela Kishore and Posani comedy is also nothing but a squib.

The rest of the cast doesn’t even need a mention (and the makers are to be blamed)

Analysis:

We know family entertainers are the in-things and most producers and directors are keen upon making time pass entertainers mixed with family and comedy. Dumb families with relationship issues waiting to be resolved by a young hero (usually an NRI), a heroine in that family who is also waiting to romance the hero, a villain who is again waiting for the hero to become a clown and an eventual happy ending! In addition to this, Brahmanandam/30yrs industry Prithvi/Posani/Vennela Kishore or sometimes all of them together to entertain with ridiculous characters and a hilarious episode in some part of the film.

Aatadukundam Raa is also something similar except with some meat under the flesh. Writer Sreedhar Seepana and “comedy entertainer specialist” G Nageswar Reddy cooked a comedy entertainer with all the above ingredients but this time something that doesn’t work for us.

Two friends thick as thieves separate due to a misunderstanding, a villain who is happy and eventually rich by ruining their friendship and a hero (son of one of the friends) who wants to expose this and re-unite the friends. Let us put aside plot – its strengths and flaws, if the entire 2hr 13mins drama is all about the NRI hero fixing up these people with switch ON/OFF emotions is ridiculous enough, the entire second half relies upon the much hyped flagship comedy track of Brahmanandam – the ‘Time Machine’ track (similar to that of the ‘dream machine’ comedy track in Baadshah movie) which is yet another risky aspect.

Firstly, it is a gutsy attempt by the filmmakers who have extended this storyline in to a complete 2hr family entertainer. All said and done, it is a decently dressed colorful commercial film that qualifies enough to be a bearable drama which cannot kill you.

Positive Points:
Nothing worthy enough to mention.

Negative Points:
Story & the substance less comedy.

Music:
Akkineni family’s good friend Anup Rubens gives Sushanth yet another commercial album in which not even one song is striking (forget about situation and narration). The much hyped “Pallekupodam..” song remix is also a half-hearted one that finds no significance in the script or no added beauty in the picturization also.


Review: Babu Bangaram – One time watchable movie

Story:

Assistant Commissioner of Police Krishna (Venkatesh) is a very soft hearted person. He cannot digest if anyone is in trouble. He does service to people whom he hits! He meets Shailu (Nayanatara) and feels very bad for her troubles. Her father absconds after getting stuck in a legal case and a group of goons are in search of him. She is stuck in lot of tensions which include police interrogation and problems in house.

Krishna understands her trouble and plans to help her without revealing his police identity. He falls in love with her eventually and the feeling is mutual. At this moment, she comes to know that it is indeed Krishna who is appointed to catch her father. Just then, her father meets with a fatal danger and Shailu moves away from Krishna. How does Krishna solve all these problems? What is the real problem Shailu’s father is facing?- forms the rest of the plot.

 Actors Performances:

Venkatesh: He looked dashingly young in this film. He is the biggest asset for this film and he tried his best to remind the audience of Bobbili Raja. Somehow, he couldn’t move that freely or was at good ease. Venky’s comedy was confined to expressions and histrionics but he was not at complete ease.

Nayantara: Nayan looked very beautiful in this film. She was neither an asset or a liability in the film but did her part decently well.

Others: The film gets bearable and entertaining thanks to two comedians Posani and Prudhvi. Prudhvi did a great job as Battayi Babji and his punches work well. Vennela Kishore was alright and there was very little scope for Brahmanandam.

Analysis:

The story would definitely remind the viewer of Nagarjuna’s old film Niryanam. Though the storyline of Babu Bangaram is old, Maruthi tried to add entertainment aspect to this. The aspect of hero being very sensitive and at the same time being a ruthless police officer might be new. But the director failed to implement it fully by adding novelty to it. First half features Prudhvi’s forced comedy as Battayi Babji and the director depended on Posani Krishna Murali in the second half.

When the story is weak, anyone has to depend on spoofs and comedy element. Nannaku Prematho spoof generates some good laughter. But once the comedy element is done, the film gets into the regular formulaic mode. Though it follows Gabbar Singh format in generating laughter for an action flick, the repetitive comedy becomes stale. First half goes well in entertainment mode but the second half drags down. Despite having artists like Posani and Brahmanandam, the second half comparatively gets bad.

The movie is technically rich with good camerawork but only one title song is catchy. The background music which resembles Bobbili Raja theme music was done well. Maruthi’s script work is below average and direction was also mediocre.


Review : Srirasthu Subhamasthu – Emotional Entertainer

Story:

Sirish (Allu Sirish) is a rich guy and his father (Prakash Raj) doesn’t appreciate middle class families. He has very poor opinion on middle class people and girls hailing from that background. He also believes that middle class folks trap rich families in the name of love with the evil idea to snatch the properties.

His elder son (Ravi Prakash) marries a poor family’s girl and he doesn’t even talk to his daughter in law not even knows her name. Incidentally, Sirish also falls for a middle class girl (Lavanya Tripathi) and plans to disprove his father’s opinion. That is why he introduces himself to the girl as a poor guy. Will he succeed in doing so? What happens next?– forms the rest of the plot.

Star Performances:

Allu Sirish: There is definitely some improvement in his histrionics but his laughter was reserved but not full fledged. He is still having issues in dialogue delivery. There is lot to learn for him in the comedy department as well.

Lavanya Tripathi: Her role was intentionally trimmed in order not to dominate Sirish’s character but she scores well in the little scope of her role.

Prakash Raj, Rao Ramesh and Others: Unfortunately, Prakash Raj’s acting looked artificial this time and the makeup was overdone. Rao Ramesh did a natural performance and it was sad to see Sumalatha-an actress with good potential getting wasted. Ali tries to tickle a funny bone and Hamsanandini is confined to just songs.

Analysis:

The story doesn’t have much twists as it is a very well known story for Telugu Audience. The director tried to show novelty in the treatment but unfortunately he couldn’t succeed in it either. Some of the sequences in the film look baseless such as the hero forgetting his hometown and details after losing the purse. Hero’s characterization will remind the audience of films like Attarintiki Daaredhi.

The interval bang and climax look quite predictable. The second half also goes down in a pale fashion where the hero lands himself in the herione’s house. Movies like Parugu and Nuvvu Naaku Nacchav are remembered here. The climax has a Bommarillu kind of sequence between the hero and his father and Prakash Raj gave the same expressions to pull it off once again. How many times do we have to witness the scene where the heroine elopes from her wedding stage and choosing the hero?

Technical Aspects:

The production values by Geetha Arts are commendable. Thaman’s music is quite forgetful but the background score was pleasant to hear. The story is quite old and the director failed to create new impact with it. The film relies heavily on emotions which also failed to create good effect.

Review: Manamantha – A must watch

Story:

Sairam (Mohan Lal) is an assistant manager in a super market. He along with his colleague Viswanath (Harshavardhan) vies for the Manager post. Gayatri (Gautami) is a middle class homemaker who always dreams of a settled and happy life. She helps her lecturer in the past whose son now becomes a billionaire in Singapore. She is offered a job in Singapore which demands her to leave her family. On the other hand Mahita (Raina Rao) is a sensitive school going girl who is moved by the state of a poor boy.

Learning that he is interested in the school, Mahita joins him into her school without permission. Abhiram (Viswanth) is a brilliant student who eventually deviates and gets lost falling in love with Aira (Anisha Ambrose). Due to series of events, Sairam faces a challenge of finding Viswanath, Mahita had to find that poor boy, Abhiram decides to commit suicide & Gayatri had to leave for Singapore. How are they related to each other and how did they overcome their challenges form the rest of the story.

Star Performances:

Mohan Lal: Glad to see this class apart back in Telugu cinema. Talking of him, his Telugu dubbing deserves a mention. Though it carries a non-Telugite tinge, he pulled it off well. His subtle yet intense performance can even give you tears at times.

Gautami: Being her straight Telugu film after a long while, Gautami proves that she isn’t done.

Viswanth: This young promising actor does justice for his character. With his lively performance he announced that he is going to stay here for long.

Harshavardhan: This able actor gave a performance on par with Mohan Lal & others.

Dhanraj: Unlike his routine comedy, he plays a subtle supporting role in this film. You might miss the usual comedian in him.

Urvasi: She plays a role with comic tinge- a supportive role to Gautami’s role adding value to the emotional quotient of the film.

Vennela Kishore, Nassar and Chandra Mohan play brief yet significant roles in the film.

Analysis:

Unlike his previous intense films like Aithe, Anukukunda Oka Roju, Okkadunnadu and Saahasam, Chandra Sekhar Yeleti came up with an emotional family entertainer this time which isn’t a regular formula film.  Manamantha is four different stories of four different age groups in one script and we need to appreciate the director for attempting a script like this. All the characters in the film are so real and the performances subtle yet intense. The director does a good job in extracting good performances from all the actors in the film thus elevating the emotional quotient of the film.

Though the first half of the film is a bit slow in its progression, it will eventually absorb you into its world. A twist in every story as the interval bang leads to an intriguing second half. This segment has proper Chandra Sekhar Yeleti’s signature in terms of engagement and building up the suspense factor. The last twenty minutes is the key asset of the film.

Positive Aspects:

Lead Cast performance especially Mohan Lal and Raina Rao.
Engaging narration especially in the Second Half.

Negative Aspects:

Stories of two lead characters.

Review : Pelli Choopulu – Fresh and Cool concept

Story:

Chitra (Ritu Varma) is a strong independent woman battling to be a successful entrepreneur with her food truck idea against to her conventional father’s will to get her married. And on the other part of the world Prashanth (Vijay Devarakonda) is a slack happy-go-lucky engineer graduate dreaming of becoming a chef but ending up fit for nothing. Even his father decides to get him married and that is how Prashanth’s family lands up in Chitra’s house as part of the Pelli Choopulu.

Due to a problematic door, Prashanth & Chitra get locked up in a room and that is where they get to know each other’s dreams, aspirations and past love stories. But only at the end of their conversation, Prashanth’s family realizes that they have come to the wrong place. What happened to Chitra & Prashanth, their dreams and lastly their blossoming relationship forms the rest of the plot.

Star Performances:

Vijay Devarakonda: Remember this guy who wanted to go to ‘Dhood Kashi’ and bugged Nani in Yevade Subramanyam? This talented guy has utilized every opportunity that came his way and continues to shine as Prashanth in Pelli Choopulu. Many of us will relate to his character in the film, especially his body language, dialogues with the typical Hyderabadi accent. Few scenes with his co-stars were hilarious too!

Ritu Varma: This gorgeous starlet was a head-turner in the role of Chitra, a strong independent woman. She was cute, contemporary and elegant in her presence and portrayal and there is always scope for improvement as an actor.

Industry gets a new comedian called Kaushik – you’ll enjoy his Telangana accent and comedy! The other supporting cast was purposeful and brilliant.

Analysis:

We have seen many films, love stories and specifically romantic comedies of all kinds but how many of them are that cute, honest and bracing in terms of storytelling?

Pelli Choopulu stands apart right from the very first frame. It is the story of a boy and girl next door naturally contrasting but with a common point – hatred for people who eat samosa with excess sauce! Now how many films today have such detailing and depth in the lead characters? Ok… if this samosa point isn’t that convincing the hero and heroine will give you enough reasons about what they are and what they are not! And given all these, the way the characters and their aspirations are brought together and set up was absolutely impressive. By the time you are relishing the first half, it breaks for intermission leaving you rooting for the characters, their resentment and importantly their story.

What do you expect from such a well-staged first half? Obviously an equally good second half or a second half that can scale it to new heights (that too if you’re over-expecting)! On an honest note, it is engaging (predictable is a cliche again) enough but it could have been more heartening only if it was dramatically rooted. And the climax leaves you wanting for more!

The best part is that director Tarun Bhascker played with his strength – a simple, fun-filled engaging narrative with a breezy treatment. And by the way the chemistry between the lead pair completely goes for a toss but looks like it is a deliberate attempt by Tarun to prove that a good love story doesn’t always need a sparkling chemistry!

On a simpler note: Pelli Choopulu has all that you look for in a romantic comedy film – a perfect pick for this weekend!

This Pelli Choopulu album is catchy, foot-tapping yet refreshing. Unlike the routine, all the songs were beautifully blended with the narrative. But what stands apart is Vivek Sagar’s back ground score that has the feel of a fresh evening breeze and aroma of a just brewed filter coffee which adds a different tone and dimension to an ordinary narrative.

Others:

Makers need to be appreciated for delivering such qualitative product with a shoe-string budget.


Review: Savitri – Decent family entertainer

Everytime we open Facebook or Twitter or Youtube, what we find in common is short films. A short film maker is born out of each and every street these days. Some are born out of passion, some are just to impress girls and some out of their personal reasons. One of the short film maker born with passion is Pavan Sadineni. He made his debut into feature filmmaking with super hit film “Prema Ishq Kadhal” which was released in 2014 and became a decent hit. He is now making his second outing with Nara Rohit and Savitri starrer “Savithri” produced by V B Rajendra Prasad under Vision Film Makers. Let’s see how it works on us!!
 
Story:
Savithri (Nanditha) is a girl who is born and is very much excited about marriage. She always want to marry to be a part in those celebrations. She is a girl who will do anything or go to any extent to get married. She gets her sister married forcibly and makes her line clear for marriage.
Her marriage gets fixed with a guy they know as family friends. She and her granny (Rama Prabha) along with Satya goes on pilgrimage to Shirdi. While in the train journey she happens to meet Rishi (Nara Rohit) and an eloped love couple (Madhunandhan and Sri Mukhi). Things get twisted when Sri Mukhi’s father’s gang attacks on train and Savithri along with Rishi and eloped couple miss the train. Who is Rishi?? What do Savithri do to get married?? That forms the rest of the story.
 
Actors Performance:
 
Nara Rohit as Rishi is superb and he lived in his role. He has to shed some weight to look handsome. He looks awkward in closeup shots. Nanditha as Savithri, a girl who always want her to be married as soon as possible. She did a terrific job in her role. Prabhas Seenu is nice in his hilarious role, a owner of Friendly Travels. 
 
Rama Prabha is good as Savithri’s granny. Maadhunandan and Sri Mukhi as eloped couple are nice and generate good humour. Posani Krishna Murali as Krishna has given nice performance. Shakala Shankar is funny. Murli Sharma is nice as Savithri’s father. Ajay as Savithri’s uncle is good. Ravi Babu is fine. Satya, Satyam Venu, Dhanya Balakrishna, Fish Venkat, Vennela Kishore and other actors did what they are given.
 
Technical Aspects:
 
Basic story and plot line of Savithri is simple yet good. Screenplay is well written and it engages audience into the movie from the word go. Dialogues penned by Krishna Chaitanya are simple and situational. Writing department has done a fine job.
Songs are superbly composed and are trendy. Sravan did a fantastic job with songs. Chitramainadhi and Pilla O Pilla are our picks. One of the highlights of the movie is his background score. It gives necessary elevation and emotion to the movie. Cinematography by Vasanth are superbly rich and they makes us audience feel positive. Editing is neat. Action is choreographed well. Production values are rich.

Review: Attack – Watch it at your own risk

A director is said to be captain of ship. He controls and authorises everything that goes into making of a film. Directing a single movie at a time is an exhausting task, mentally and physically. So, directors don’t take that risk. As an exception to this, we have RGV aka Ram Gopal Varma. We have a plenty of movie posters or teasers or trailers released of his movies. One in that list is Manchu Manoj starrer “Attack” produced by C Kalyan, Swethalana and Teja under C K Entertainments, having Beeruva fame Surabhi as lead actress. It is releasing into theatres today. Let’s see how it works on us!
 
Story: 
 
Guru Raj (Prakash Raj) is a business man and a person who once runs a rowdy gang. He has three sons Kali (Jagapathy Babu), Gopi (Vadde Naveen), Radha (Manchu Manoj). While on a visit to temple, Guru Raj is attacked by a gang and is killed. His family is clueless about the motive behind this attack. 
 
Kali starts digging out the possible reasons and motive for this attack and people involved and planned. Everyone starts going opposite them. They even gets no support from anyone. They doubt a person and find about his whereabouts through a Police. Kali goes there with his gang and he is killed in this attack. Then it is the rise of Radha to solve all the problems. Who is behind these attacks?? What is the motive behind these attacks?? That forms the rest of story.
 
 
Actor’s  Performance: 
 
Manchu Manoj as Radha doesn’t get much to perform in the first half. He is good throughout his role. Jagapathy Babu as Kali is impressive. It is said to be a comeback of Vadde Naveen. He is good with his performance. Prakash Raj as Guru Raj is adequate. RGV narrated philosophy through his role. What can a good actor/actors do when the script itself is a vaccum. Surabhi is seen hardly in the movie. Poonam Kaur is only meant for her thigh show. Abhimanyu Singh is good. Other actors are adequate.
 
Analysis:
 
Attack story plot is just laced with attacks and counter attacks. There is nothing to look into this story. Dialogues are simple and philosophical at times. All the characters in the movie are under developed. The script of this Attack is a big zero. Screenplay is bad. It fails to engage audience and also fails to create curiosity.
 
Music by Ravi Shankar is okay. His background music has nothing to do with this movie. His score where Jagapathi Babu dies is very bad. Cinematography by Anji is good. They are all RGV’s vintage angles. Ariel shots are good. Editing by Anwar Ali is mediocre. Stunts are well composed. Production values are good.

Review: Oopiri – A must watch emotional entertainer

Multi Starrers are not too common in our Telugu films. We see two stars coming together for a film very rare. In the olden days they were so common. For the reason unknown, our Telugu film viewers experience it very rarely. Trend of multi starrers again started with Mahesh Babu and Victory Venkatesh starrer Seethamma Vakitlo Sirimalle Chettu directed by Srikanth Addala produced by Dil Raju. This is again time for a multi starrer with Nagarjuna and Karthi coming together as cast with Thamanna Bhatia in female lead directed by Vamsi Paidipally under PVP Cinema. Let’s see how it works on us.
 
Story:
Seenu (Karthi) is a guy released from jail on parole. He is thrown out of his house by his mother (Jayasudha) about his behaviour putting his siblings career in his her mind. He attends an interview just to pass time and to get shelter. He then appointed as a care taker to Vikram Adithya (Nagarjuna Akkineni), chairman of Vikram Adithyaa group of companies. He is a quadriplegic patient, whose body is more like paralysed leaving his body parts immovable. How he takes care of Vikram?? What is the real reason behind Seenu getting job?? Answers to these questions form the rest of the story.
 
Actor’s Performance:
 
Nagarjuna Akkineni as Vikram Adithya, a quadriplegic patient is a lot more than fantastic. Their is no enough words to match his acting capabilities or his performance in Oopiri. As he was saying in interviews it is definitely a life changing movie for him. Karthi as Seenu is super good and is terrific in his role. 
 
He complimented Nagarjuna very well in performance like a brother. Thamanna Bhatia is fantabulous and super beautiful. Jayasudha is superb as a middle class mother. Late Kalpana garu is nice. Prakash Raj did a superb job. Ali is hilarious in his role. Thanikella Bharani is good in his limited role. Other actors did according to their given role. Cameos have been used well.
 
Technical Aspects:
 
Story is so simple with a lot of emotions. Screenplay is so engaging and so convincing that audience watch it with a happy emotion on their face and wet eyes. Dialogues are situational and are well written. Songs are fresh and breezing to ears. They are well composed putting situations in mind by Gopi Sundar. 
 
His background score is what it makes movie more emotional and more engaging. It is spell bounding. Cinematography by P S Vinodh is fantastic. He visuals are added advantage to this fantastic movie. Editing by Madhu is crisp. It is perfect. Race sequence is composed well. Production values are so rich.
